Let’s talk about something super important: Protein.
If you’re not aware of how much you consume, running low on it, we need to chat because the effects can be a bit scary.
The GOAT Macro
First off, Protein is like the superhero of nutrients.
It does so much for our bodies, and when we don’t get enough, things can get a bit wonky.
Here’s the lowdown on what might happen if you’re not getting sufficient protein:
Low on Pro? You May Experience…
Muscle Loss:
Uh-oh! Protein is the superhero for your muscles, helping them stay strong and repairing any wear and tear. Keeping you lean.
If you’re not getting enough, your muscles might start waving goodbye.
Impaired Immune Function:
Protein is like the shield for your immune system. A lack of it could leave you more vulnerable to getting sick because your body won’t have the right tools to fight off those pesky infections.
Slower Metabolism:
Protein actually burns more calories when you eat it compared to other nutrients. So, if you’re low on protein, your metabolism might take a bit of a snooze, affecting how your body manages weight.
Nutrient Deficiencies:
Protein-packed foods also come with essential sidekicks like iron, zinc, and B vitamins. Not having enough protein could lead to a deficiency in these nutrients, causing issues like fatigue and brain fog.
Poor Wound Healing:
Got a little scratch or recovering from surgery? Protein is like the healing wizard for your body. Without enough of it, the healing process might take longer than it should.
Edema and Swelling:
Protein helps keep the fluids in your body balanced. Without it, you might experience some unwanted puffiness and swelling, especially in your hands and feet.
Hair, Skin, and Nail Issues:
Think of protein as the beauty expert for your hair, skin, and nails. A shortage of it could lead to brittle nails, hair loss, and skin problems. Not a great look.
Hormonal Imbalances:
Proteins also have a role in the hormone production party. If you’re not inviting enough protein, the hormonal balance might get a bit wacky, affecting everything from metabolism to mood.
Keep in mind these effects can vary based on your age, activity level, and overall health.
Focus on Your Protein
The goal? Make friends with protein and aim to hit your daily protein requirements – roughly 70-100% of your total body weight in grams per day.
Don’t know where your daily Protein is at?
Challenge For You:
Actively track your Protein intake for 2 weeks straight. You may recognize right away how far away from the minimum 70% you are. Slowly work your way up to that range.
Trust me, your body will thank you! ????
