I’ve experienced and seen firsthand how misconceptions and misinformation can stall, stop and hinder progress with fitness, health and body changes all together.
I myself have fallen victim to some of these as well, even as a gym owner for nearly 13 years and someone who’s been involved in the health and fitness space for 20+ years.
Allow me to help clear the air, pop the balloon so to speak and touch on the 10 biggest misconceptions I continually see.
If you’re 30-55+ years old, looking to build strength, lose weight, and improve your overall health and well-being – this is for you!
- Expense or Investment?
Let’s address one of the biggest concerns people have: cost. “What is it going to cost me?”
What is it going to cost you to not invest in your health and fitness?
Many mistakenly view fitness, a gym, or coaching as mere expenses.
What is an expense?
= Something that yields no direct return, making it of little to no value, not useful or impactful.
Where does the gym becomes an expense?
If you’re paying for it yet not actually showing up, putting in the work to get the results.
In this case, it’s easy to see why it would feel like a waste of money.
However, the real issue isn’t that it’s an expense – it’s you. Its your lack of commitment.
Access gyms like Planet Fitness provide equipment, they often cater to those who are already self-motivated and know how to train effectively.
Investments compound over time. They protect us. Make life better for us. Give us freedom, ability and choice. The remove fear and limitation.
Consistency with your fitness transforms what you’re spending into a commitment to the improvement of your life – through health and well-being.
This commitment not only enhances your physical fitness but also ripples into and improves every area of your life, including:
- your mental health,
- your body composition,
- your self confidence,
- your energy levels,
- productivity at work, at home and in everyday life,
- your capability to do everyday things,
- your sex life,
- and your overall health (quality and quantity),
Your gym experience is an investment that builds discipline, resilience and routine, contributing to long-term wellness for both your present and future self.
This perspective emphasizes that the time and money spent at the gym yield significant dividends in vitality, confidence, and overall life satisfaction.
By recognizing the profound impact of your investment in fitness, you empower yourself to embrace a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle.
2. Fitness Is Only for the Young
Using the excuse of “I’m too old.”
Many believe that fitness is primarily for younger individuals, thinking that exercise is off-limits as we age.
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
People of all ages can benefit from physical activity.
Regular exercise enhances strength, flexibility, and balance, which are crucial for maintaining a high quality of life, no matter your age.
This is where coaching becomes invaluable.
Your Coach has your safety, limitations, ability all in mind as they teach, guide and navigate your training. They are there to help you stay safe, make continued progress, be accountable and commit to preserving your functionality – no matter your age, injuries or limitations.
3. Exercise Leads to Injury / Is Dangerous.
Some people think that exercising will inevitably lead to injuries.
Or lifting weights will hurt them.
Or that CrossFit is dangerous.
As a fitness professional for 13 years who’s trained thousands of bodies, I will say this – everyone usually has something going on with their bodies.
A knee, a shoulder, a back or hip that bothers them, hurts, feels funny or off.
We are human beings and our body is our vehicle through life, and we discount the wear and tear we encounter over years. Or, how much sitting slowly rots away function.
And we fail to take personal accountability for our inconsistency with regular exercise over years.
Not to mention, things just happen. Aging occurs, things change, our bodies change.
Tweaks, setbacks, injuries can and all do occur.
That is a part of having a body and using it.
Yet to think or use it as an excuse to not regularly exercise or train is a mistake.
Many are preventable with proper technique, gradual progression, and a willingness to listen to your body. And even when you do encounter a tweak, setback or injury, hiring a coach is how you safely train and get back.
Exercising regularly, and when approached correctly, is both safe and beneficial.
